Given its white table cloths, fancily-folded napkins, eager waiters, chic decorations and menus, the Piemontais would like to lead us to believe is among the top in its specialty, Italian cuisine. Unfortunately, it remains far from delivering the expected culinary experience. I went there for lunch, and ordered an antipasto of salmon tartare, and a half-portion of gnocchi a la piemontaise. The salmon tartare was prepared with capers, oil, and garlic. Compared to other tartares I've had before (I'm thinking of Lemeac on Laurier), this one lacked refinement and sophistication. It was served on a bed of vegetables (watercress, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, and red cabbage). Only the watercress brought any dimension to the tartare. In addition, the cabbage was a day (or more?) old, far from what one would expect when paying $17.95 for an appetizer. The gnocchi ($13.95 for the appetizer-portion, $22 for the full-sized dish) was prepared a la piemontaise (sauce rosee, meat, and mushrooms). The gnocchi was way over-cooked, far from the al-dente any pasta connoisseur would come to expect. As for mushrooms, I had to look very hard to find one slice of coffee mushroom in my dish. The sauce lacked spices (except salt) and overall savoriness. I just couldn't shake the feeling that I was eating Chef Boyardee meat sauce with the over-cooked pasta. You would expect a lot more for nearly $40 (tx/tip incl, but no wine). February 27, 2008.
